St John of God Health Care has entered into an agreement with Vasey RSL Care for it to acquire the St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital site, with hospital operations expected to end in late October.
Vasey RSL Care, an established provider of aged care services and accommodation to veterans and the wider community, has future plans to redevelop the site to provide aged care services in response to growing community demand across the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region.
Vasey RSL Care is scheduled to take over the site on 16 November 2026.
St John of God Health Care Group Chief Executive Officer Bryan Pyne said the decision followed careful consideration of changing health care needs across the region and the future role of the site in continuing to support the local community.
“Rehabilitation care has changed significantly in recent years, with services increasingly being delivered within acute hospitals and through home-based models of care,” Mr Pyne said.
“As a standalone rehabilitation hospital that relies on referrals from other health care providers, these changing patterns of care have created increasing challenges for the long-term sustainability of the service,” he said.
“While it is a difficult decision to cease rehabilitation services at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital, we are pleased the site will continue serving the community and responding to an area of growing need.
“Vasey RSL Care is a respected not-for-profit provider whose purpose, values and commitment to community align strongly with our own, and we believe they are well placed to continue the site’s legacy of care and service to the Frankston community.”
Vasey RSL Care Chief Executive Officer Janna Voloshin said Vasey RSL Care welcomed the opportunity to build on the site’s long history of care.
“The St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital site is well situated to support our plans to provide high-quality aged care services that respond to the changing needs of the local community, while continuing the strong tradition of compassionate, person-centred care associated with this site,” Ms Voloshin said.
Mr Pyne said safe, high-quality patient care would remain the hospital’s priority until St John of God Health Care’s operations cease at the site.
“St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital will continue to deliver rehabilitation services over coming weeks as we carefully manage a gradual transition of services, with patient admissions and activity to reduce before the hospital ceases operations on 23 October,” he said.
St John of God Health Care has commenced discussions with private health care providers across the region to support continuity of rehabilitation services and minimise disruption for patients and their families as services transition.
Mr Pyne said patients and their families would be supported throughout the transition process and information would be provided to help them understand options for their individual care arrangements and next steps.
“For more than two decades, Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital has been privileged to serve the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula communities,” he said.
“The hospital leaves a lasting legacy of care, compassion and dignity, shaped by generations of caregivers who have faithfully cared for those in need.”
