When Insurers choose, patients lose: Peak Bodies
March 10, 2025A Queensland mum has given birth to a healthy baby girl during Tropical Cyclone Alfred after arriving at Mater Mothers’ Hospital “just in time”.
Ashleigh Alofokhai made it to the hospital’s birth suite just four minutes before her second daughter, Theodora, was born at 4.48am, weighing 3.2kg.
The Mater Private Hospital Redland nurse said her waters broke in the car on the way to the South Brisbane hospital.
Her husband Moses drove through strong winds and dodged fallen trees on the road, she said.
“Giving birth to Theodora was quite a chilled experience despite everything going on with the cyclone”, Mrs Alofokhai said.
“I didn’t have time to think about the cyclone to be honest, everything happened quickly!”
Mrs Alofokhai is looking forward to taking her newborn home to meet her two-year-old sister Gwendolyn.
Baby Alfie
Meanwhile, a Brisbane mum has given birth to a premature baby boy, named Alfie, just 48 hours before Tropical Cyclone Alfred made landfall in South East Queensland.
Parents Han Zhang and his wife Ning welcomed their son seven weeks’ early last Wednesday at Mater Mothers’ Hospital, weighing 1.8kg.
While his name was picked well before Tropical Cyclone Alfred began brewing, he didn’t let the system rain on his parade.
Alfie, who has two older brothers, was born at 33 weeks’ gestation and is being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
“We feel that Alfie is just like a cyclone, when he decided to come out, nothing could stop him,” Mr Zhang said.
“For us it wasn’t quite the calm before the storm, but we are happy he is here now and in safe hands.”
Mr Zhang thanked the multidisciplinary team at Mater for taking care of his wife and newborn son.
“Since the moment we arrived at the hospital they were all so caring and professional,” he said.
