Former Member of Parliament and renowned Yamatji artist Carol Martin OAM is sharing a more personal side of her story through a new solo exhibition at St John of God Geraldton Hospital.
Well known across Western Australia for her trailblazing political career, Ms Martin made history in 2001 as the first Aboriginal woman elected to any Australian Parliament, serving in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Member for the Kimberley for more than a decade.
Behind the scenes, art remained a constant throughout her life.
Midjie Exhibition brings together three decades of Ms Martin’s art, reflecting the memories, culture, experiences and landscapes that have shaped her life.
On display in St John of God Geraldton Hospital’s Foyer Gallery until 25 November, Midjie marks Ms Martin’s first solo exhibition on Yamatji Country.
“Art has always been my relaxation,” Ms. Martin said.
“For many years, I painted quietly, sharing my work only with myself and a small circle of family and friends.
“Over time my confidence has grown, allowing me to embrace my identity as an artist and share these deeply personal creations with my community.”
Midjie Exhibition showcases landscapes that have inspired Carol, from the red earth of Pindan Country in the Kimberley to the Baba Mada, Yamatji for coral, and coastal waterways around Geraldton.
“Each painting reflects a different chapter in my life, capturing memories, experiences, culture and the changing landscapes that have inspired me over the years,” Ms Martin said.
St John of God Geraldton Hospital Chief Executive Officer Phillip Balmer said the exhibition had a special connection to the local community.
“Many of Carol’s artworks feature places and landscapes that will be familiar to people across our region, and we are delighted to be able to share this impressive collection with our community,” Mr Balmer said.
“Exhibitions like Midjie demonstrate the important role art can play in creating welcoming, inspiring and healing environments for our patients, visitors and caregivers.
“We all bring different gifts and talents, and at St John of God Geraldton Hospital we want to recognise and celebrate those who use their gifts to enrich our community and make it an even better place.”
The exhibition was officially launched on 28 August, with Ms Martin sharing the stories behind her works and inviting guests to touch, feel and interact with the artworks.
The launch also included the sharing of St John of God Geraldton Hospital’s newly finalised Reconciliation Action Plan, with Reconciliation WA founding members Dr Jim Morrison OAM and Alan Carter speaking about the importance of local approaches to reconciliation.
The exhibition will run until 25 November and artworks are available for sale.
