CHA backs private health reforms and calls for swift implementation
July 2, 2026Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital in Tasmania has officially celebrated its newly renovated maternity ward with an official opening by Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Rebecca White and State Health Minister Bridget Archer, alongside Calvary’s leadership.
Marking the milestone with a plaque unveiling, the ambitious redevelopment has nearly doubled the hospital’s birthing capacity and secured the future of maternity care for Hobart families.
Following the cessation of maternity services by another provider in March 2025, Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital stepped up to ensure there was continuity for safe, high-quality maternity care for new mothers in Hobart.
According to Calvary Regional Chief Operating Officer for Hospitals Vic/Tas, Melissa Evans, the significant support of Federal and State Government funding, including a $2 million contribution, allowed the ward’s capacity to double to 900 births a year.
“We have been able to achieve this with the addition of a fifth birthing suite, a new Special Care Nursery, and a range of improvements to patient amenities and midwife work areas,” Ms Evans said.
“Staff have worked hard over the last 14 months to ensure a smooth transition and a warm welcome for new doctors and midwives, to build a vibrant and busy unit.
“This has been a significant team effort and we are delighted to have the two ministers here to acknowledge the many contributions, including the governments that have gone towards completing this project successfully.
“Calvary also acknowledges the contributions of the Tasmanian Heath Service, the Royal Hobart Hospital and Hobart Private Hospital for their assistance and collaboration during this time.”
Ms Evans also thanked the Calvary maternity team for their compassion, professionalism and dedication to ensuring outstanding care for Hobart’s mothers and babies each and every day.
Founded by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary in November 1938, the hospital’s maternity ward first opened in October 1944.
