Canberra’s modernising an intergenerational trap

Nurses supporting older Australians was the focus of a visit by Federal Treasurer Dr Jim Chalmers to Catholic Healthcare’s Villa Maria Residential Care Home in Ipswich recently.
hosted the Federal Treasurer, the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP and the Federal Member for Blair, the Hon Shayne Neumann MP.
The Treasurer was joined by the Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, who met with Catholic Healthcare CEO Josh McFarlane, employees and residents.
A key topic of conversation was the final stage of the Australian Government’s aged care nurse wage increases, which took effect on 1 August 2026. The increase marks the final phase of the Aged Care Work Value Case and Work Value Case – Nurses and Midwives, which began in October 2025 for eligible enrolled and registered nurses.
The Treasurer reflected on his personal connection to the profession, sharing that his mother, Carol, worked as a night shift nurse for 47 years.
Catholic Healthcare Registered Nurse Raylene Schatz, who has cared for residents for the past 10 years, said nursing had always been about making a difference.
“I became a nurse because I wanted to help and support older people, especially by providing comfort and dignity in their final moments and knowing I’ve given them the very best care possible,” Ms Schatz said.
“This wage increase provides greater financial security, particularly with the rising cost of living.”
Catholic Healthcare CEO Josh McFarlane welcomed the recognition of the aged care workforce.
“Our nurses provide compassionate, skilled care every day, supporting older Australians to live with dignity and respect,” Mr McFarlane said.
“It’s wonderful to see aged care nurses recognised for the vital contribution they make to our communities. Investing in the workforce helps attract and retain talented nurses and ultimately strengthens the quality of care available to older Australians.”
The visit also provided an opportunity for residents Dorothy, Betty, Kathryn, Olivia and Irene to spend time with the Treasurer and Mr Neumann, sharing stories about their lives and reminiscing about the history of the local community.
Dr Chalmers presented residents with freshly baked scones and locally made jam to enjoy for afternoon tea.
