June 15, 2026St John of God Health Care has reached a major milestone with the practical completion of the new St John of God Midland Private Hospital, bringing the highly anticipated 123-bed facility one step closer to opening its doors to patients on 27 August 2026.
Delivered by construction partner Built, the new standalone hospital, located within the historic Midland Workshops precinct, represents a significant investment in the future of health care for the region expanding access to modern private health services closer to home for thousands of local families.
St John of God Midland Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Unwin said reaching practical completion was an exciting milestone and reflected years of planning, collaboration and St John of God Health Care’s long-standing commitment to the Western Australian community.
“This hospital is about much more than a building – we’re creating a place of care, compassion and healing for our community,” Ms Unwin said.
“This hospital has been thoughtfully designed to provide an exceptional patient experience, combining leading clinical services, innovative technology and welcoming spaces that support healing and wellbeing.”
“With practical completion achieved, we’re now focused on commissioning and final preparations ahead of welcoming our first patients in August,” she said.
Among its key services is interventional cardiology, a first for the region which will provide local access to specialist cardiac procedures closer to home.
The hospital will also introduce on-demand room service dining, a first for private hospital patients in Midland and a highly regarded feature across other St John of God hospitals in Perth, offering greater choice and flexibility as part of a personalised care experience.
Patient-centred design features are woven throughout the hospital, from welcoming patient rooms and modern operating theatres to calming day surgery spaces, creating an environment that combines clinical excellence with comfort and care.
Innovation has also been central to the project’s delivery. Construction partner Australian-owned contractor Built adopted a digital-first approach, harnessing advanced digital engineering, virtual reality technology and detailed 3D modelling to improve coordination, enhance efficiency and identify potential issues before construction began. By overlaying a virtual model onto the physical construction site, project teams were able to resolve challenges early, helping improve project certainty and support the successful delivery of one of Western Australia’s most significant private health infrastructure projects.
“Delivering a modern hospital is an incredibly complex undertaking, and achieving practical completion ahead of schedule is a testament to the seamless collaboration between Built, St John of God Health Care and our outstanding sub-contractors,” Built’s WA Director Jon Stone said.
“By adopting a digital-first approach from day one our teams were able to build with extreme precision, eliminating traditional construction friction points and ensuring absolute project certainty.
“It is particularly meaningful to deliver this innovation within the historic Midland Workshops precinct. We are proud to have built on that legacy, combining modern craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to hand over a world-class facility that will serve this community for generations.”
Behind the scenes, hundreds of people continue to work together to prepare the hospital for opening, including teams across clinical services, operations, technology and support services, as the project enters its final stage ahead of opening in August.
