Social justice in the Catholic health and aged care sectors is a rich tradition that for many of us stretches back more than a century when religious orders first provided healthcare in Australia, ministering to the sick, the poor and marginalised.
In 2021, through the annual HESTA award, CHA is recognising and celebrating the cumulative efforts of our members in giving back to their communities, beyond the core work of providing care in hospitals and aged care. Today collectively our members deliver almost $70 million in services back to the community through more than 100 social outreach programs both here in Australia and in the region. Every day to further their mission Catholic hospitals are providing on average material, staffing and facilities to the value of $181,000. They range from the training of health volunteers in Papua New Guinea to providing free healthcare to those seeking asylum in our cities. Each year it is estimated that our services touch the lives of more than 150,000 people. All of this is made possible because we continue to operate on a not-for-profit basis, using our resources to fund projects that would not otherwise exist. Above all we do it because it is a continuation of the ministry of healing that is at the heart of the organisations that are our members and the mission of the Catholic Church.
The 2021 HESTA Award for Catholic Health Australia will recognise an individual, or team, who has shown creativity, commitment, and accomplishment in effecting positive social change.
Short-listed applicants will be invited to present on their work at the CHA National Conference in August, providing an opportunity to not only award a winner but also celebrate the vast array of service and giving across our sector.
Application Process:
Submit a 500 to 1000 word statement addressing the following:
• What is your project?
• Why is your project innovative?
• What is changing because of your project, and why is this important?
Please also include any other information about your project which you feel is relevant and speaks to its purpose. No project is too big or too small, and the judging panel will simply be looking for innovation and impact – whether it’s for one person or many.

Submissions close 30 June
Board Sub-Committee shortlists submissions
Shortlisted applicants are advised and invited to present on their project at the Conference
Presentation format to comprise: 1 slide only, 3 minutes maximum
Winner announced at conference based on application and presentation ($5000 and trophy)
Process and decisions are at the absolute discretion of CHA.
