St John of God Ballarat Hospital’s new Medical Services Building under construction late last year
St John of God Ballarat Hospital’s $80 million redevelopment has made a great start, with more to come this year ahead of the project’s 2024 completion target.
The project, which began in early July, will include a new Medical Services Building, a new 10-bed ICU/CCU, a new Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) and four new operating theatres.
There will also be an expanded recovery room, upgraded catheterisation laboratory and a new 30-bed in-patient ward.
Since July, and despite increased rainfall throughout winter and spring, the hospital’s new pathology space has been completed, with Australian Clinical Labs moving from its old space into this new location in early September.
That cleared the way for work to start on the new CSSD, which is due to be completed in the first half of this year, along with new theatre staff rooms and change rooms.
Work has also begun on the new Medical Services Building, with foundation laid and concrete pylons being positioned in December.
The Medical Services Building structure is set for completion in the second half of this year.
Director of Redevelopment, Emma Challands, is excited by the pace of the project and what this year promises.
“I’ve been involved in many projects over my career, and it’s still astounding how quickly a new hospital wing can be built.”
