March 18, 2021Former NSW premier Mike Baird AO has been confirmed as a speaker at this year’s Catholic Health Australia National Conference in Brisbane this August.
Mr Baird was the 44th Premier of NSW and led the state’s Liberal Party from April 2014 to January 2017.
He left politics to return to banking before being appointed in April last year to be chief executive of HammondCare, an independent Christian charity regarded nationally and internationally as one of Australia’s most innovative health and aged care providers.
Mr Baird will be a keynote speaker on the subject of Dimensions of Future Care: Patient Experience, Leadership and Innovation.
Lucy O’Flaherty, the chief executive of Glenview Community Services, the Tasmanian aged-care provider behind the development of a self-contained village for people with dementia, will also be talking on the same topic.
The conference theme is the apposite Facing the Future Together and brings a host of high-profile leaders together to share the learnings of the past year and assess the challenges that lie ahead, whether that is the sector’s resilience, the future of private health, or larger themes such as the future of patient care and reform of the aged care sector in the wake of the Royal Commission.
CHA CEO Pat Garcia said he was looking forward to hearing both speakers.
“Mike Baird has a wealth of experience in dealing with government and has a unique perspective now that he is in the aged care sector, while Lucy O’Flaherty is pioneering ways of managing dementia among our older Australians.
“It will be fascinating to hear their insights into the age-care sector, and in Mr Baird’s case how aged care and governments can work together. Both promise to be informative and inspirational,” he said.
“The national conference is shaping up to be a key opportunity for the sector to come together to share their experiences over the past year and talk about their plans for the future of health and aged care.”
CHA’s National Conference will run from Monday, August 23 to Wednesday, August 25. A full registration brochure will be available soon.
