Jim’s advice at 101: “Pause and see the beauty around you”
November 8, 2024Southern Cross Care has marked half a century of service to the regional New South Wales community of Broken Hill.
The milestone event, held at the city’s St Anne’s Nursing Home, brought together over 150 attendees, including government officials, community members, residents, volunteers and current and former employees.
Established by the Knights of the Southern Cross (Branch 14) in 1974, Southern Cross Care Broken Hill comprises four residential aged care homes and three retirement living villages, serving both Broken Hill and Mildura, over the border in Victoria.
SCC Broken Hill Chair Eamonn Dare addressed the crowd, highlighting 50 years of dedicated service and dedication to the region’s elderly community.
“Over these five decades, the Knights have been more than just providers; they’ve been advocates, friends, and companions to countless seniors. This commitment to creating safe, nurturing environments has enabled many to live their lives with dignity and purpose.”
Margaret Hoare, a long term resident at another of Southern Cross Care’s Broken Hill homes played a key role in the celebrations.
“I’ve been involved with Southern Cross Care in Broken Hill for 42 years,” Miss Hoare said.
“First as a volunteer, then a staff member, and later as a resident at both Con Crowley Village and more recently at Harold Williams Home. It was wonderful to be invited to represent the residents and cut the cake at the celebration.”
Over the past 12 months Southern Cross Care Queensland, which itself operates eight homes in regional and remote communities, has worked closely with the Broken Hill team, providing essential support in areas including compliance and statutory obligations.
As part of this process and, through a commitment to fostering growth and sustainable services, a new Regional General Manager has been appointed.
Speaking during the anniversary celebrations Larni Baird said, as Southern Cross Care Broken Hill looks to the future, it remains focused on strengthening partnerships and maintaining a high standard of care in Broken Hill, Mildura and beyond.
