Southern Cross Care celebrates 50 years in Broken Hill
November 7, 2024In a colourful display of culture and community, staff at Southern Cross Care NSW & ACT’s Daceyville home celebrated Diwali / Tihar, the Festival of Lights, with traditional costumes, music, twinkling lights, and of course dancing.
With around 80 per cent of the staff hailing from Nepal, the event was a beautiful blend of tradition and togetherness, bringing joy to residents and caregivers alike.
The highlight was the staff performing special dances, their graceful movements and intricate choreography leaving residents spellbound, with many unable to resist the temptation of joining staff on the makeshift dancefloor.
For many of the staff who have left their families behind to provide care in Australia, the residents have become a surrogate family, offering a profound sense of belonging and emotional support.
“The residents really are like our grandparents, we care for them, and they care for us, we have such a very special bond,” Anjali said.
“It’s wonderful to be able to share our culture and traditions with them, we are very grateful that Southern Cross Care encourages us to celebrate our special festival with them.”
The residents, in turn, were delighted by the festivities and said they were a heart-warming reminder of how lucky they were to have such a diverse workforce caring for them.
“They bring so much love, culture and happiness into our lives,” said resident Joy.
“It’s beautiful to see their traditions and to feel like we’re part of their families, as we feel like they are part of ours.”
The Diwali celebrations served as a powerful reminder of the connections that blossom through cultural exchange, enriching lives and strengthening the Daceyville community
