June 3, 2021Richard and Carlos Celis were born at just 27 weeks gestation following complications from Twin-to-Twin syndrome, on Tuesday 1 June they turned 15-years-old and were reunited with the nurses who saved their lives.
The team from the Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) welcomed the boys back to the hospital, showing them where they spent the first 106 days of their lives in critical care.
To celebrate their birthday the boys and their family have walked 106km to represent the 106 days they spent in critical care from their home in the Gold Coast to raise funds for equipment in the NCCU.
Their arrival at the NCCU represents a huge and emotional milestone especially for their mother Jane.
“The boys had Twin-to-Twin Syndrome where blood does not flow evenly, Richard had too much blood and Carlos not enough, I had to have an emergency c-section as Carlos was in distress,” Jane said.
“I was so shocked to see how small they were and they both required ventilation to breathe. Carlos needed four surgeries in the first three months of his life, I believe his survival is nothing short of a miracle.
“The Mater Mothers’ helped us through our ordeal both clinically and emotionally and we will be forever grateful for our beautiful boys. This is an emotional moment, but I am so proud that we have this opportunity.”
The family are walking to funds raised will help to purchase a Maternal Fetal Medicine Laser which can perform lifesaving procedures to help other babies who have Twin-to-Twin syndrome.
