June 17, 2025The long-term future of aged care and retirement living has been further strengthened in Broken Hill and Mildura following the transfer of operations that build on the legacy of the Knights of the Southern Cross.
Southern Cross Care Queensland (SCCQ) has assumed operational responsibility for the services delivered by Southern Cross Care Broken Hill, ensuring vital services remain available, accessible, and sustainable for regional communities.
SCCQ CEO Jason Eldering said the transition reflects a deep respect for the legacy of the Knights over five decades.
“This transition is a continuation of the mission established by the Knights of the Southern Cross and those who have faithfully served in this region for 50 years,” Mr Eldering said.
“This is a profound moment for both organisations.
“Our priority is to ensure continuity of care for residents, to honour and support our dedicated teams, and to make the necessary long-term investments in people, infrastructure, and systems so that services in these communities remain viable and vibrant for decades to come.”
The transfer builds upon a collaborative partnership under a Management Services Agreement (MSA) established in July 2024, which has helped stabilise operations, strengthen governance, and enhance care outcomes over the past year.
SCCQ has more than 40 years of experience delivering aged care and retirement services in Queensland, including almost two decades in regional and remote settings. The organisation now brings this depth of expertise to Broken Hill and Mildura, while committing to listening first and working respectfully alongside local teams and partners.
“There are increasing complexities in delivering aged care, especially in rural and remote regions. Our aligned heritage and values-based approach to care is more important than ever” Mr Eldering said.
“We are committed to working with all levels of government, stakeholders, and communities to advocate for a fairer deal for regional aged care. Together, we will continue to grow communities where the best lives are lived.”
