Paper explores new foundations for a just residential aged care sector
October 4, 2024Providing aged care requires compassion, empathy and patience – all qualities that come naturally to Vicki Newham and her daughter, Rebecca Mesa, who are both integral members of the Mercy Place Mount St Joseph’s team in Young.
With more than 40 years of combined experience in aged care, their shared commitment to residents’ well-being is evident.
“I always knew about my mum’s work in aged care, but it wasn’t until I tried it for myself through work experience in school that I discovered my own passion for helping the elderly,” Rebecca said.
“Being able to give back to the older generation is incredibly rewarding, especially in a town like Young, where the residents at Mercy Place have helped build our community.”
For Vicki, working with the elderly has always been fulfilling.
“It’s a privilege getting to know each resident and hearing their stories I’m fortunate to be part of a fantastic team at Mercy Place, especially with my daughter by my side,” Vicki said.
“I never pushed Rebecca into the field, but seeing her succeed in the industry with the same passion I have for aged care makes me immensely proud.”
When asked what it takes to provide quality aged care, Vicki and Rebecca agree that an open-mind and empathy are important.
“The exciting thing in health services is that there’s always something new to learn, and every patient is unique. Being willing to learn from others and respecting the individual identities of residents is what makes a great aged care worker.” Vicki said.
Vicki, Rebecca, and the entire team at Mercy Place Mount St Joseph’s in Young are dedicated to providing a variety of compassionate care services that enhance the health, comfort, and happiness of residents.
