Help for those accompanying Catholics facing end-of-life decisions
August 1, 2024Following last October’s review of St John of God Bendigo Hospital’s maternity services, a new affordable midwife-led model called Joy was introduced alongside their traditional obstetrician-led service.
Essentially, Joy delivers the benefits of private health, ensuring high-quality care at a lower cost. Designed to meet the needs of parents seeking exceptional care without the higher expenses typically associated with private maternity services.
The new program has made a positive impact in its early months, with 22 expectant mothers registered for the Joy maternity program. Six months after its launch, St John of God Bendigo Hospital is thrilled to announce the arrival of its first baby, Harper Jayne Mercer.
Born on July 23 at 6:37pm, Harper’s arrival marks a significant milestone for the program. Mother Amanda Mercer (pictured above) shared her experience with Joy and the birth of her beautiful baby girl.
“The highlight was not so much the labour itself, but the support I received during. There was a midwife there from when I called the hospital to when I gave birth – there was midwives with me 24/7. As hard as it was, they made me feel so supported, it was just beautiful I couldn’t thank them enough.” said Amanda.
Amanda expressed her gratitude to Nurse Unit Manager Nicole Harris and her team of dedicated midwives.
“I can’t thank Nicole and the midwives enough for everything they have done for me. Through the whole process from start to finish they have been amazing, there is nothing too big or too small that they will not help me with. Providing 24/7 care, helping me feed her, I am actually going to be really sad to be leaving” she said.
“The midwives have been second to none, the obstetricians have been overwhelmingly caring and supportive, all in my best interest and what I want. I could not recommend the Joy program highly enough.”
Creating a supportive environment ensures that mothers like Amanda receive expert care and guidance throughout their pregnancy and birth journey, providing the best possible start for both mother and babies.
