Fatima – From Forced Labour to Freedom
July 2, 2024Last month, Mercy Place Montrose resident Elsie Mallard celebrated her 104th birthday.
Born in 1920 in Derbyshire, England, Elsie has led a remarkable life of resilience and independence including working in a cotton factory at the age of 14 and serving with the Salvation Army during World War II.
After welcoming three boys into the world with her late husband Joe, the pair moved to Australia in 1960 where they built a lifetime of memories.
Despite having a fall just days before her birthday, Elsie was determined to not let anything stand in the way of celebrating the significant milestone.
The independent and sharp minded 104-year-old says family connection has always been important to her, ever since she was a child.
To celebrate her birthday Elsie was joined by her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at Mercy Place Montrose.
