November 18, 2021On behalf of Catholic Health Australia members, we would like to offer our condolences and sympathies to Bishop Bill Wright’s family, following his death on Saturday, 13 November having succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 69.
Bishop Bill was ordained eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in 2011. He worked tirelessly in his service for the mission to ‘heal the sick’ while he sat on the CHA Board as the Australian Catholic Bishop Conference’s representative.
CHA Chair, the Hon. John Watkins AM, said he made a significant contribution to the important work of CHA members during his tenure.
“Bishop Bill was a person who was deeply dedicated to serving those most marginalised in society. He was a warm, friendly and an inspiration in supporting the work and mission of Catholic hospitals and aged-cared facilities. He will be greatly missed.”
Bishop Bill announced his illness and confirmed he had submitted his resignation to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, in September this year. Whilst he had confirmed his ill health, the Diocese said the speed of Bishop Bill’s death was unexpected.
Bishop Bill Wright was replaced on the board in June 2021 by Bishop Karol Kulczycki of the Port Pirie Catholic Diocese.
