Rocky hairdressers lift spirits of Mater patients
November 11, 2024Mercy Place Warrnambool resident Jim Davison has celebrated his 101st birthday alongside family and fellow residents. Jim spent the special day reflecting on his life, which has been full of adventure, hard work, and deep connections.
Born in Parkes, New South Wales, in 1923, Jim’s life began in a small rural community where he developed a strong worth ethic and resilience.
“I used to walk five miles to school every day, and then I had to work on the farm,” Jim said.
“There was little time to do homework.”
After finishing school, Jim became a farmhand before his path took him to World War II. He served for four years driving an ammunition truck, sometimes working 36 hours at a time. After the war, he returned to farming in the Riverina region of NSW, where he met the love of his life, Avery. Their romance blossomed, leading to marriage and the joy of having two sons together.
“Being married to Avery was the best time of my life,” Jim said.
Avery’s sudden passing at the age of 34 left Jim heartbroken. In the wake of this tragedy, he committed himself to raising their sons and being a steadfast source of support for them. Through this difficult time, he still embodied community spirit, always willing to help neighbours and friends when they needed it.
Now, at Mercy Place Warrnambool, Jim enjoys a slower-paced life that allows him to participate in activities he loves. He can often be found solving quizzes, reading a good book, watching his favourite sports, and enjoying social gatherings with fellow residents.
Jim marked his 101st birthday by gathering with family and enjoying a Chinese meal together. According to Jim, it was a perfect way to celebrate a life well-lived, surrounded by loved ones who deeply appreciate his ongoing support.
His advice for the next generation?
“Pause and see the beauty around you.”
